Scahill v Yiannopoulos

sy

I can understand why Jeremy Scahill backed out of doing HBO’s Real Time – though I think it would have been more about Milo Yiannopoulos‘s connection to Eric Prince rather than his social science rhetoric.  Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Milo hire Erik Prince or his friends, to protect him?

It is also my understanding that Milo wouldn’t be on the same panel/segment as Scahill, it’s a side interview, correct? Is it just a matter of timing or does that mean any TV show or network Milo graces Jeremy won’t?

If not, his rejection or boycott of Real Time with Bill Maher seems to be a simple protest against Milo being invited to appear on the program, yes?  The confusing parts are his reasons, and he doesn’t really elaborate on them beyond the standard MSM kinda rhetoric. I would like clarification on these “racist anti-immigrant campaign” accusations?

I don’t remember hearing Milo make any type of racist slur, Jeremy cites no instances, and I think there is a difference between immigrants who have gone through the system and immigrants who cut in line ahead of those who patiently waited their turn. I wonder, would Jeremy acknowledge there are differences?

Further, for Jeremy to say that Milo’s words could spark violence against immigrants and vulnerable people, well that can be said about anyone who speaks on just about any topic these days. Is every venue now a theater, and every topic the word fire?

It gives the impression that Jeremy doesn’t think much of the American People, and that’s okay cause neither do I, but Freedom to Speak, Free Speech, is more important, and that’s the risk we take by living in the USA, is it not?

It’s also the most important of all the Amendments, so important it was placed in the First Amendment and right after the non establishment or prohibiting of religion – or as I call it, the ability to imagine and create.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

When you think about the whole bunch, the Amendments that follow are there to basically instruct the government how to leave you alone, but that’s another topic.

Regardless, speech shouldn’t even be a big deal in this country, but it has become more so this last decade and we need to ask the question, why is that?

Without speech, agree or disagree, you can’t have any freedoms and if my speech, or your speech, or Milos speech sets people off on a path towards violence then we need to figure out PDQ why in the US people who CHOOSE to listen to anyone’s speech want to do anyone physical harm?

That is not what the Greeks had in mind, nor the Forefathers of the Nation.

It’s a risk Jeremy Scahill himself takes when he writes about the MIC. There are plenty of people in the Deep State who would like to shut him up; oh, and anyone who says Jeremy Scahill is a coward for not attending a TV show is really an uninformed idiot. Sorry, you need to look into the places Scahill has gone, and the people he has taken on before you call this guy a coward.

Anyway, what is most confusing is the stand Jeremy takes towards vulnerable immigrants. Using that logic, Bill Marher has probably done more to spur vitriol towards vulnerable immigrants – specifically Muslims – than most people on the planet, certainly in the MSM. So why didn’t Jeremy boycott his show long ago? Kind of a double standard, eh?

Stuck in two worlds perhaps – Legacy media vs the Internet and all things Free and Open?

Anyway, Jeremy’s reasons are his reasons, but in the realm of logic and constancy they fall short on this one and his efforts have actually done the exact opposite of what I think his real desires were. He has actually created more of a buzz, more PR, more money and more attention for Milo. [BTW, this is a great example of the differences between Legacy Media vs The Internets.]

Bottom line, the FEDS have chipped away at so many of our other Rights, we all need to be a purest on the issue of Free Speech or nothing else matters.

Sin-Seriously, nothing else matters.

addendum: 02/20/17
Many people have weighed in on this show, the banter from both left and right were typical in response regarding Milo and Maher and his other guests. However, after watching the program I couldn’t help, but wonder what if Jeremy did the show, made some statement about how he doesn’t agree with anything Milo says, and since Jeremy speaks succinctly and is also a very fast talker he could have said everything and then some about how he felt about Milo in less then 30 seconds. What was missed was an opportunity, an opportunity bigger than the so called moral high ground Jeremy decided to take which was to chastise the MSM for their lack of reporting on Yemen. From Obama, to the Saudis, to the Israelis, to Trump. Such a great and grand opportunity was so sorely missed over what? A gay, right-leaning, white male, who enjoys sex with black men, hates feminists, chides overweight people, and is terrified that Muslims are going to throw him off a roof and behead him? People are being slaughtered in Yemen, the Saudis are bombing farms so the children starve; advice given to them by the Israelis, and the weapons killing these people are all provided by the USA.

Seriously Jeremy, you gave up a giant soapbox opportunity that could have informed the mostly uninformed Bill Maher audience because of a drama-queen named Milo?

sigh…. shakehead

update – 02/21/17
…in clutching pearls –  I listen to both shows -complete- over the weekend and I walked away with a couple of thoughts.

1. I’m convinced that Milo Yiannopoulos was sexually abused as a young teenager, but I also believe he was a very precocious teen – and the reasons for that could be many.

The picture I have in my head comes from listening to him and his friends for almost a year. Apparently, he lived with his grandmother so obviously there were stability issues between mom, dad and home. I had also heard stories that his father was somewhat of a rough and tumble mobster. [for some reason I picture the film Snatch when I think about a portion of his upbringing]. Now the truth in all of that is fairly sketchy because I have absolutely no first hand knowledge. Regardless, if his history is true my experience with kids in these kinds of situation generally command a lot of attention, and they learn how to get it because they are taught that’s how life is done.

Society sends many mixed messages and there’s no doubt that a Catholic upbringing amplifies that mixture. Torn between guilt and the need to be guided, have limits and be wanted places vulnerable young minds, by our standards, in a very unhealthy and unstable place. Some people never quite work through them. Many drink, abuse drugs or commit suicide, we know that for most of modern history this was the fate of many homosexuals. Now clearly Milo craves attention, that’s his coping mechanism, perhaps his addiction, certainly better than drugs I guess. Anyway, there’s a lot there to process and by all means no doubt very complicated.

Milo has made it very clear on a number of occasions that he and all gay men have plenty to deal with, and let’s face it he joined up with a party that doesn’t see homosexuals as a wonderful addition to the club. Can you imagine the look on the NEOCON’s and Mitch McConnell’s face when they got wind that a gay-limey-black-dicksucking-catholic=jew-redcoat would be speaking at CPAC? You could almost hear that turtle-head mumble, “nofuckingway!”

So many people have said Milo is foolish and should just go home and sit with the Democrats where his accessory laden wounded childhood ass belongs. Others would say he’s a cutting-edge, a vanguard, the fountainhead, a trail-blazer for the new USAAAAAAAA, and still others will call him a provocateur, rabble-rouser, and attention whore.

Milo is entertaining, tiresome, probably a hell of lot of work, and might just be too European for most conservatives, but that’s Milo and the reason why people like him, nay love him, is cause he works so hard at being who he is. He’s real, or trying his best to be and that’s what the American people crave, and for most the desire to be real is buried deep down in our DNA. To be who you truly are without care and no physical harm, -to be- once again. We Americans were once real, we were once pioneers and trail-blazers too – now we’re a society full of schlubs, debt-ridden basket-cases, oxy-drugged up, running on empty and going no where fast. I’ve got a ton of clinches to describe American Society if anyone wants more.

But oooh, and aaaah, to have a temperament and think not it offends is a delight, that is true freedom, acceptance and how to build genuine community. Oh PLEASE, let the ISIS hoards have Europe and bring all the Europeans to the new world!.

I have more to say about none of this.
.

2. So all that said – I don’t know what’s in Milo’s head or heart, but I know people who have gone through shit and how they deal with it depends on many factors.

How we, the public, in general deal with his words is hard to say.

I don’t think we will care much in the end cause we couldn’t care less about all the people our troops are killing in the Middle East right at this moment. Nor do we care about those we sell weapons to, nor those locked in our prisons for silly charges or for being mentally ill or addicted, nor those who are homeless sleeping rough and the list goes on and on and on and on …

Milo may be regarded as a defective human being, or one who deserves mass sympathy and empathy, he will suffer ridicule and vitriol, he may even end up being this generation’s Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes.

Is he advocating for pedos at any age? I don’t think so, I think he’s probably thought about this topic far more than most and is somewhat toughen by it’s outcomes, he has a thicker skin, wouldn’t you think? After all these tragedies just never seems to end, you fight and then you recoil, you do the best you can after you cry, a lot. What happens in too many of these cases is really beyond imagination. Most people can’t even look – it’s horrible. I did work for a short time with a few victims, I couldn’t handle it, I had to quit. 9 out of 10 case nothing happens, the system doesn’t work and it looks for compromises. You have to be more than just tough.

When you think about this topic and how it’s been approached it’s really not unlike the news we hear when the US bombs a hospital full of children, or when we discovered that the Saudis are bombing farms with weapons we sold to them in Yemen so the people will starve to death, or when those four young boys were playing on a beach near Gaza and were mercilessly gunned down by the Israelis with our tax dollars, or the women who have been raped, even grandmothers, in Europe by refugees who were made that way by their crazy religion and our government’s policies. What a toxic mix that is. Who came up with such an idea and plan?

We hear these thing all the time, we are shocked and sadden, but not surprised and yet we are never really inspired to do anything to stop this murderous abuse – we talk about them, joke about them, and we know these things are wrong and that we should take action, but oh well, what’s for dinner? What’s on TV? What video game should I play tonight?

We all know voting isn’t enough, right? Trump or Congress can say tomorrow morning, “No more war, bring the troops home, now!” We have some identifiable proof that such action actually works – see Vietnam.

But the Middle East, well that’s a volatile wasp nest in the world, and ya know, those people…

Do we think it’s our fault, and make excuses for these actions? We are after all bombing them or supplying the weapons to murder them. Our media no longer shows us the tragedies and sufferings. Why is that you think?

And what about the children, our children, are we doing them a disservice by not hunting down and locking up every creepier than thou pedo? Why aren’t we banishing them after time served, deporting them to a desert island never to be heard or seen from again, never to cause harm to the most vulnerable in our civilized society? Why haven’t we sent that strong message of absolute caring for our children? Is it cause, as long as it’s not my kid?

Oh God, who even wants to or have to think about that shit, much less deal with people who have suffered through it and the mistakes they make that always follow? Not me, how about you?

Roosh V makes an argument – 02/22/17

My goodness Aunty Em, I didn’t think this topic would still be going on, but here we are…

A few points in response to RooshV. First, nice shirt. 2nd, soon as I escape Liberalland, which feels more like Hotel California, and looks a lot like Scarfolk I will make real vlogs. If you want to help me escape drop a key or two on my Patreon or bitcoin, like a ring full of them one will eventually fit the lock and set me free.

Re Milo: If Milo pushes back too hard now they will accident him, and he doesn’t have any real martyr status yet.

Roosh is absolutely right about Breitbart.

Re Trump: Trump has a history of capitulating in business, he sees it as part of “The Deal” just look at some of the people he has appointed. Further, his real loyalty is to family first/last, his narcissism extends to, ‘be glad it’s me and not Hillary, I didn’t have to do this ya know.’

Re Spencer: Spencer has problems with homosexuals, they can’t breed in the traditional family way. He joins the NeverTrumps on this front, along with the segregationists and separatists. btw, there are people who think Spenser should replace Milo at Breitbart.

Interesting in this Milo escapade, trip, slip, perhaps downfall; though I think he has phoenix blood in him, that we also see all the splinter groups in the GOP very clearly now. Before we saw the conservatives and anti-Trumps, but in this hot mess we see who and how they identify.
(do you hate that term identify, sorry).

Republicans: Libertarian, Libertarian-Isolationists, Traditional Conservatives, Cuck-servatives, Reagan-Democrats, RINOS, Never-Trumpers, Far-Right, Alt-Right, Neo-Right, NEOCONS. (did I miss any?)

In contrast we have the so-called liberals. The left is united under the Democrats, from Antifa and BLM to the traditional blue dog democrats, but ONLY through hating Trump. The real persuasive power is in the TRUE Progressives who hate the leaders of the Democrats.

In the end Roosh wins the argument on what is most important, free speech, that IS the clarion call.

I do believe that we have now reached the end of this chapter, but we’ll see.

…umm… well… not yet

We Are At War – ALT M

altmI have an idea that could be useful to all those in the alt-media who wish to join forces and beat the onslaught of the corporate owned control freaks in the MSM.

Goal:
To develop an alternative media clearinghouse that is based on Current News Topics submitted only by those in the alt-media who wish to support and participate in the clearinghouse.

The website for this outlet should be simple, text based.

Traffic will be topic driven. Members can choose what topics they believe are High Level, Medium Level and a Constant Level Alert in order to fulfill the desired effects of getting the information to the public while letting the public know that alt-media exists and is a vital part of the public’s discourse and welfare.

Members have complete creative control regarding how they approach each topic. The only part necessary to agree upon is the topic level, more about that in a bit.

Topics:
It doesn’t matter how you approach a particular topic as long as it is titled and labeled either fact based or opinion driven.

All contributions submitted should be short, in summary form, with a link to a longer piece if needed or desired.

If a High Level Alert is perceived to last longer than the 24 hour news cycle it is hoped members will continue to push the current high level narrative even if it is just a reminder to your viewers or readers of your work or the work of others in order to be mindful of the current situation. Keeping the topic in the forefront of the public’s mind is paramount. As they says,  it’s all in the timing.

What Constitutes alt-media?
1. Nothing MSM.
2. A thoughtful and very informed individual/citizen.
3. A small news outlet or fact based citizen journalist with a constant presence on the net.
4. A dedication to diminishing the corporate owned MSM.

How It Works:
All members of the alt-media are welcomed to subscribe to the Alt-M.tba website and agree to do at least one story in concert within 12 hours under the topic of a high level alert

Three Levels of Alerts:
High, Medium and Constant.

Incorporating the memetics paradigm is highly encouraged.

High Level Alerts:
Are topics that appear to be catching on, like a festering wound, but are not based in fact, sourced or a questionable narrative that is receiving incalculable amounts of spin by MSM. Under a high level alert it is expected that all members will produce some sort of story/video combating that alert over a 12 hour period. All members must participate, even if that means you are already working on something and waiting for more information, still, let your viewers know the topic exists and that your report is coming soon. The alt-media topic is what matters most and that there are others outside the MSM working on the subject as well.

Examples of High Level Alert: SOPA, war, a whistle-blower coming forward, terror attack, weapon’s deals, government worker or agency lying – something that will either be confirmed with facts or works to counter or question the spin coming from the MSM. High Level can also be a bi-yearly or monthly concerted effort to inform the public that there are alt-media sites available to them at all times.

Medium Level Alert:
This would be something less urgent, but enough concern that people come together to produce topic based stories in concert. This level would be important information that could lead to further conflict or danger, it is a very watchful eye. If the perception is that all facts are not being released, or the MSM is leading up to a particular misguided narrative, this level would be akin to the town crier.

Medium Level topics are ongoing until they become High Level or they are resolved and archived.

Medium Level topics might be something you wish to pontificate upon over the course of a week, a month or years. It’s always in wait or at dead rest. It can open the door to more information from your readers or other alt-media members, perhaps even provide an outlet for whistle-blowers.

Constant Level Alert:
A piece produced by alt-media members at will, reminding the public how the MSM gets it wrong, or out right lies. This level provides an opportunity to report and shine a light on the spin and lies of the MSM and their over paid and elbow rubbing cohorts.

It is recommended that all members document their observations whenever possible using tags, dates, times and a document the particular medium. A good example would be, Chris Cuomo stating that it is only legal for the MSM to look at the DNC hacked e-mails produced by wikileaks. 10/16/16, 10AM, EST. CNN (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DcATG9Qy_A).

Everything else is up to the writer, and as a reminder you are always free to approach any topic in your own creative way and from your own personal perspective, as long as you state to the viewer or reader you are talking about facts (which you can back up) or this is your educated opinion.

Your suggestions for topics are also a good way to share and be inspired by others. Think about giving props to another alt-media news site or author if you are inspired to write or bring a particular topic to the attention of your subscribers.

Website:
Depending on the sophistication of the system to distribute this idea can become rather complicated – but I encourage the development of this system to be simple and easy to access.

4 Pages:
Front Page – Topics and Alert Level displayed.
Page 2 – List of News Outlet.
Page 3 – List of Individuals Reporters.
Page 4 – Member’s Page Access.

The front page, outlet and individual reporters pages will be open to the public and have a direct link to your site or channel.

The Member’s Page is only open to members. Here members are allowed to set topics and vote on the levels of any particular subject, it is also a place to commit to writing or recording with others alt-media members about different subjects, perhaps even a vbulletin forum.

There should also be an e-mail and text alert system once a topic becomes high level. It is further thought that any topic reaching a high level alert should be decided by at least 5 trusted members who agree unanimously to alert members through the texting and e-mailing system.

Donations:
A kickstarter and donation buttons, perhaps even a Patron page can be established

Why?
We need this because we are at war and could lose so much if not all. The abuse and power of MSM and the growth of the Independent Alternative Media has changed the information landscape, from Andrew Breitbart to wikileaks and the hosts of other investigative alternative news web sites whose priority is exposing the truth, not spinning the story for parties, lobbyist, banks and corporations. Love him or hate him Andrew Breitbart was correct, we are at war with the MSM, we need to jump in and lasso the narrative quick, and we need to take hold and use the memetics at every turn!

alt-media has to act and organize fast, it can’t be bothered by personal politics, religion, race, gender or philosophy – all the things use to divide us – right now it’s about securing the narrative and making sure there is always a chair at the table for the truth and your freedom to report and speak it. If we don’t organize now, we could lose our voices.

To Recap
1. Incorporate memetics, video and written paradigms.
2. Where topics are driven by timing and the effect they have on the well being of the public to decide.
3. Using the concept that there is power in numbers and knowledge is power.

Calling out the MSM quickly and with force creates it’s own being or entity to contend with, alt-media thus becomes a bullhorn, grabbing more of the public’s attention in order to educate or at least giving the publics the notion to say, “Hold on, not so fast MSM,” in a bigger and more focused way.

What do you say, let’s light this candle!

update: 02/16/17
Just a quick note, the amazing response by the alt-media and the broader community to help and stand-up for pewdiepie was not only amazing, but demonstrates and proves the power we have as members and advocates for the alt-media, and as the people and citizen of many nations. I beg you to start organizing now before the MSM catches on and works to silence every voice that chooses to take the leap and step-up. Remember, they have endless funds, plenty of time, a ton of lawyers, own most of the politicians, along with having the deep state in their pockets.

FYI:
TPP is back under a new name TISA.

Sorry folks, sadly Trump’s no friend to Net Neutrality.

.
As most of you know I am a big advocate for free speech, so whatever your bag I believe you have a right as a human being to express your thoughts. If you’re interested I outlined mine a bit in this article here, but to recap, watch the video linked to pewdiepie above, he made a really nice and sincere response. I can honestly say his channel didn’t interest me, but after his response I actually subscribed in order to support him, this man is very dynamic. I also realize he does a lot of silly caca, but if he decided to take on any issue as a vocation there’s no doubt in my mind he would be very successful because he is authentic, the real deal, a mensch.

There has also been a number of wonderful video responses made regarding what happen to pewdiepie; if anyone wants links leave a comment and I’ll pull them together and post them directly here.

In all honesty, I have to say this particular situation was really a clear shot across the bow, people need to come together and develop a small yet efficient system to remain vigilante. The MSM may not make the same mistake of picking on a very popular youtuber again, they will simply chip away and silence those who do not have the same exposure or numbers.

The reach needs to be broader than the local community as well. If pewdiepie didn’t have the number of subs he has (53 Million, YOW!) he would have been left to the wayside or relegated to the dust bin of history.

No matter, I have to admire pewdiepie, a.k.a. Felix Kjellberg  (BTW,  did you know Felix means happy, and isn’t that a wonderful name for this fellow? ), he could have taken his money and gone on to other things, but he didn’t, he stood up and not just for himself, but for humanity, for free speech; how often do you get to do something like that in your life and actually make a difference?!

Personally, I have a lot of dull and boring things on my plate, far too may filled with pointless stress and anxiety, trust me, I’d rather do something like the above than what I actually do to survive, wait, hold on, whilst I check my lottery ticket…..  As I was saying, if things turn around in one direction or the other I would love to be part of a project like the above, a movement or some mechanism that works to protects individual rights to speak rather than funding a small cabal of 6 media outlets that own 80% of the MSM we get now.

Please, keep me in mind, and feel free to ask. Remember, advice is always free and help is on the way!

if you don’t understand this, you make too much money.

In the end, which isn’t played in this clip, Moore still backs Clinton – for all the wrong reasons.

Still, he’s right about one thing, if she wins and can’t bridge the gap – which for the life of me I don’t see how she could, it’s not in her character or make up – the country is on the path to over. Trump voters will not go gentle into that good night.

Who is the hell is Lawrence Lessig?

You’re about to find out.lvws

First, go here

Impressed?

Mr. Lessig is actually more than qualified to run for what we are still calling high office here in the good ol’ US of A, but his real goal is not all the accolades and power that come with the job.

This Is His Goal:
“We Need to Fix Our Democracy: Lawrence Lessig Weighs Presidential Run to Rid Money from Politics”

Are you even more impressed now?

With all of the excitement in the current presidential derby I was caught up in the whole Donald Trump escapade. I wasn’t going to bother voting until Trump stepped in when I thought, “What fun!”

Now, some might take that particular attitude as the words of an irresponsible, flippant, nay nihilistic 2nd class citizen, but with a dimes worth of difference between the two parties, the banks and corporations holding all the cards and money, we’re not living in a free society, a democracy or even a republic anymore, Trump at least shook things up. C’mon, he admitted paying politicians to do his will, the media should have been all over that statement like white on rice, but the media is owned by guys just like Trump; worse even, who buy and sell politicians for lunch. They aren’t going to talk about the puppet-masters on the corporate owned MSM news channels! Dictatorships never do. Thing is, we know what Trump said about buying politicians is true, we’ve known for a long time it’s all true, yet when one of their own says it out loud we can actually taste it, we can experience the truth behind his words physically, like a punch in the face.

So Freedom: what exactly is that? Here’s someone who can soundly explain the idea of what robust citizenry is supposed to look like.

Oh, and don’t get me started on the Diebold Machines.
Yes, that HBO Documentary is dated, but it has only gotten worse and computers easier to hack by nefarious underlings, and Congress has done absolutely nothing to fix this.

Voting machines are rigging elections
Voting machines switching votes
Programmer testifies voting machines are rigging elections

So here’s my big question for Prof. Lessig, what do you fix first, money in politics or the voting machines?

Most of you already figured this out, but just to be clear… to get the money out all you got to do is win, but in order to win people have to vote for you and how are you ever going to win if the voting machines are rigged?

Anyway…  along comes Lawrence; I think some call him Larry; been following and watching this guy for over a decade now, anyway he comes up with this idea of how to take our government back.

Now I had already resigned myself in great part to secession. I figured after the next election the banks will own everything including us, it’s the next step in this taking-forever-unfolding-economic-collapse, but I rolled Lessig’s idea around in my nut and I thought, ‘Here is a secret magic door that could actually be a game changer!’ cause let’s face it, eventually we will have to come to our senses and do the right thing, right?

The Bottom Line: Give it a go, you got nothing to lose, seriously, unless you’re the 1% you have absolutely nothing left to lose and absolutely everything to gain. We have to get the money out of politics, you can’t change one thing until this happens first.

You’re in a boat in the middle of a lake, the boat is filling with water and a bucket won’t do, you got to fix the holes. As long as the money keeps pouring into our political system we’re going to sink and the hole is getting bigger and bigger with every election. There are too many people without a life jacket for the current system to continue.

Lessig is going to blow your mind, his campaign requires you to think differently about political campaigns. This is definitely not what you’re used to, but you have to be if you want to fix the boat and enjoy the lake.

Remember: “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Lessigs approach will put an end to the insanity. The only question you have to ask is, are you tired of being insane?

Here are some more in-depth links I offer up for your exploration, do the research! I’ll add more as time goes on.

Check back for updates.

French hackers unveil the HADOPI router: cracks nearby WiFi and makes your traffic traceable to your neighbors
French hackers claim to have sabotaged Internet forensics by creating a firmware for routers that cracks nearby WiFi networks and routes your traffic through them at random, creating false trails leading to your neighbors instead of you. They’re calling it the HADOPI Router, in honor of Nicolas Sarkozy’s crazy Internet law of the same name.

HADOPI originally required ISPs to disconnect users after three unsubstantiated claims of copyright infringement (Princeton’s Ed Felten compared this to giving publishers the power to take away all the printed matter in your household if you were accused of committing three acts of illegal photocopying or cut-and-paste). The law was initially defeated in the French parliament, then it passed on reintroduction, only to be struck down by France’s high court on the grounds that it violated human rights. more

youtube.jpgYouTube Ordered to Pay $1.6M to ASCAP
A district judge has ordered YouTube to pay $1.61 million in royalties to U.S. songwriters, and $70,000 per month going forward. The judgment came last Wednesday in New York, but we didn’t see coverage of it until today when Techdirt picked it up; there was an earlier report on Law360 that you can read if you register. Songwriters, like everyone else, want a piece of YouTube; for instance the co-writer of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” recently claimed he’s been exploited by the “rickrolling” phenomenon, only earning £11 from Google for his trouble.

The particulars of the fee are only temporary as YouTube and ASCAP go to trial over blanket licenses for ASCAP’s songs in a case brought last May. As Techdirt describes it more

Murdoch papers paid £1m to gag phone-hacking victims

Rupert Murdoch’s News Group Newspapers has paid out more than £1m to settle legal cases that threatened to reveal evidence of his journalists’ repeated involvement in the use of criminal methods to get stories.

The payments secured secrecy over out-of-court settlements in three cases that threatened to expose evidence of Murdoch journalists using private investigators who illegally hacked into the mobile phone messages of numerous public figures to gain unlawful access to confidential personal data, including tax records, social security files, bank statements and itemized phone bills. Cabinet ministers, MPs, actors and sports stars were all targets of the private investigators. more

cwdSecret itty bitty logo-googlePresentation Defends Invasive Behavioral Ads
Online search giant Google, already under fire for its privacy policies and a self-serving online book publication deal, is now apparently trying to persuade Capitol Hill policymakers that its so-called behavioral advertising, which targets users based on their browsing–is benign, said Consumer Watchdog. The nonpartisan, nonprofit advocacy group has obtained  a “confidential” and “proprietary” Google presentation for lawmakers that, ironically, touts Google’s commitment to “transparency,” but skirts tough questions about its secretive user data tracking, storage and sharing policies.

Google increasingly spies on what consumers do online, including what web sites they visit; creates dossiers on users’ online behavior without their prior permission; then harvests this private information to sell hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising, said Consumer Watchdog.

Consumer Watchdog posted the presentation along with an annotated version, prepared by an industry insider, that calls out Google’s deceptions. The group urged lawmakers and the Justice Department to view both versions and consider strict limits on how Google collects and uses its customers’ online behavior.

Possible Environmental Causes For Alzheimer’s, Diabetes
A new study by researchers at Rhode Island Hospital have found a substantial link between increased levels of nitrates in our environment and food, with increased deaths from diseases, including Alzheimer’s, diabetes mellitus and Parkinson’s. The study was published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease (Volume 17:3 July 2009).

Led by Suzanne de la Monte, MD, MPH, of Rhode Island Hospital, researchers studied the trends in mortality rates due to diseases that are associated with aging, such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, diabetes and cerebrovascular disease, as well as HIV. They found strong parallels between age adjusted increases in death rate from Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and diabetes and the progressive increases in human exposure to nitrates, nitrites and nitrosamines through processed and preserved foods as well as fertilizers. Other diseases including HIV-AIDS, cerebrovascular disease, and leukemia did not exhibit those trends. De la Monte and the authors propose that the increase in exposure plays a critical role in the cause, development and effects of the pandemic of these insulin-resistant diseases, more

Thousands of Chinese troops flooded into this city Wednesday to separate feuding ethnic groups after three days of communal violence left 156 people dead, and a senior Communist Party official vowed to execute those guilty of murder in the rioting in western China.

Long convoys of armored cars and green troop trucks with riot police rumbled through Urumqi, a city of 2.3 million people. Other security forces carrying automatic rifles with bayonets formed cordons to defend Muslim neighborhoods from marauding groups of vigilantes with sticks.

Military helicopters buzzed over Xinjiang’s regional capital, dropping pamphlets urging people to stay in their homes and stop fighting. Special police from other provinces were called in to patrol the city.

The crisis was so severe that President Hu Jintao cut short a trip to Italy, where he was to participate in a Group of Eight summit. It was an embarrassing move for a leader who wants to show that China has a harmonious society as it prepares to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Communist rule. more

Swiss ready to seize UBS data to stifle Washington
The Swiss government on Wednesday waded into the legal battle between UBS and the US authorities by saying it would forbid the bank from handing over confidential client information, if a crucial court case next week required it.

Bern warned it might go as far as confiscating the data, should a US court in Miami rule the bank was obliged to transfer the client names requested.

The move marks a major escalation in the war of words between Bern and Washington over US demands that UBS hand over names of up to 52,000 US taxpayers holding offshore accounts in Switzerland. more

US officials eye North Korea in cyber attack
.S. authorities on Wednesday eyed North Korea as the origin of the widespread cyber attack that overwhelmed government Web sites in the United States and South Korea, although they warned it would be difficult to definitively identify the attackers quickly.

The powerful attack that targeted dozens of government and private sites underscored how unevenly prepared the U.S. government is to block such multipronged assaults.

While Treasury Department and Federal Trade Commission Web sites were shut down by the software attack, which lasted for days over the holiday weekend, others such as the Pentagon and the White House were able to fend it off with little disruption.

The North Korea link, described by three officials, more firmly connected the U.S. attacks to another wave of cyber assaults that hit government agencies Tuesday in South Korea. The officials said that while Internet addresses have been traced to North Korea, that does not necessarily mean the attack involved the Pyongyang government.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

South Korea intelligence officials have identified North Korea as a suspect in those attacks and said that the sophistication of the assault suggested it was carried out at a higher level that just rogue or individual hackers.

U.S. officials would not go that far and declined to discuss publicly who may have instigated the intrusion or how it was done.

In an Associated Press interview, Philip Reitinger, deputy under secretary at the Homeland Security Department, said the far-reaching attacks demonstrate the importance of cybersecurity as a critical national security issue.

The fact that a series of computers were involved in an attack, Reitinger said, “doesn’t say anything about the ultimate source of the attack.” more

itty bitty Google to Challenge Microsoft With Operating System
Google Inc., owner of the most- visited Internet search engine, is developing a computer operating system based on its Chrome Web browser, taking aim at Microsoft Corp. in its strongest market.

The system will be designed at first for low-cost laptops called netbooks, Google said in a blog post. The company is in talks with partners on the project and computers running the software will be available in the second half of 2010.

The plan escalates Google’s rivalry with Microsoft, which extends to Web search, browsers and business applications such as word processing and spreadsheets. Windows, Microsoft’s flagship product, runs about 90 percent of the world’s personal computers. Google is also trying to spur Web-ad sales after reporting its first sequential revenue drop as a public company.

“There is a possibility that the new OS can break the paradigm Microsoft and Intel created over the past 20 years,” aid Yukihiko Shimada, a computer analyst at Mitsubishi UFJ Securities Co. in Tokyo. “There is plenty of business opportunity for Google in this market.”

Google said it’s working with computer makers to introduce a number of netbooks next year, without identifying any of the companies. The Chrome OS will be open-source, meaning the program code will be open to developers, Google said. The software will work on top of the Linux operating system.

Netbook Competition
Frank Shaw, a spokesman for Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft, declined to comment. Windows accounted for 28 percent of the company’s $60.4 billion annual revenue in the 12 months ended June 30, 2008.

Microsoft has stepped up its efforts in the netbook market. It said in May it plans to remove a restriction of running three applications at a time on its forthcoming Windows 7 Starter Edition, which is designed for netbooks. The announcement eliminated one of the most significant differences between the basic edition of the operating system and a pricier one.

Google, based in Mountain View, California, rose $5.86, or 1.5 percent, to 402.49 in Nasdaq Stock Market trading at 4 p.m. New York time. Microsoft advanced 3 cents $22.56. Google has risen 31 percent this year and Microsoft has added 16 percent.

Online Strategy
The Chrome OS is consistent with Google’s focus on getting people to use software online, which contrasts with Microsoft’s approach of providing programs on the computer itself. Google started offering business software in 2007, allowing users to access spreadsheets and word-processing documents via the Web, just as anyone might access the search engine or Google News.

“We hear a lot from our users and their message is clear — computers need to get better,” Google said. “The operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no Web.”

Google is trying to encourage people to spend more time online to fuel demand for Internet ads, which accounted for more than 90 percent of its 2008 revenue of $21.8 billion. In the first quarter of this year, Google had its first sequential sales drop since it went public in 2004 as the recession prompted companies to curb advertising spending.

The open-source Chrome OS will probably win over companies that don’t want to pay for Windows, said Jim Friedland, an analyst at Cowen & Co. in New York. The system may also help Google sell Web-based applications, such as the Gmail e-mail service, that run on top of it, he said.

“They really haven’t cracked the enterprise yet,” said Friedland, who rates Google’s shares “outperform” and doesn’t own any. “We’ve seen some inroads around the edges.”

‘More Options’
Computer makers such as Acer Inc. and Asustek Computer Inc. already have plans to offer computers running Android, an open- source operating system backed by Google and initially designed for mobile phones. Acer, the world’s second-largest laptop maker, said last month it plans to release a low-cost notebook powered by Android. Asustek Computer has also developed a netbook that runs on Google’s software.

“Having another OS or another interface does create more options, and with the weight of the Google name behind it, does lift its prominence,” said Bryan Ma, a computer analyst at IDC in Singapore.

Google said that while the Chrome OS is separate from Android, the two will overlap in some areas. The Chrome operating system is designed to save users from having to deal with viruses and security updates, Google said.

“Google Chrome OS is being created for people who spend most of their time on the Web, and is being designed to power computers ranging from small netbooks to full-size desktop systems,” Google said. “While there are areas where Google Chrome OS and Android overlap, we believe choice will drive innovation for the benefit of everyone, including Google.”

‘Beneficial to Users’
Hewlett-Packard is studying the Chrome OS and is open to “various approaches to meet its own customer needs,” Marlene Somsak, a spokeswoman for the company, said in an e-mail. She declined to comment on whether Hewlett-Packard plans to introduce products based on the system.

Dell constantly assesses new technologies as part of its product-development process, said Anne Camden, a spokeswoman for the company.

Tony Chen, chief operating officer of Asustek’s notebook unit said by phone the company will consider “anything that’s beneficial to users.” Fujitsu Ltd. spokeswoman Nozomi Endo said the company will monitor market conditions before deciding whether to introduce products using Google’s operating system.

Spokespeople for Acer, Sony Corp., Samsung Electronics Co., NEC Corp., Panasonic Corp., and Toshiba Corp., declined to comment.

Search Rivalry
The Chrome OS — which will run on traditional Intel Corp.- based x86 chips along with semiconductors designed by ARM Holdings Plc — will work on lightweight netbooks along with more powerful computers, including desktop PCs, Google said.

Google’s Chrome still faces an uphill battle against Microsoft’s browser. Chrome, which was unveiled last year, had 1.2 percent market share in February, compared with 67 percent for Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, according to research firm Net Applications, which tracks Web statistics.

In May, Microsoft introduced a search engine called Bing that has enhanced shopping, travel and sorting features. Bing’s market share climbed to more than 10 percent in June, according to Comscore Inc.

Google’s search engine is No. 1 in the U.S., holding more than 60 percent market share. Microsoft is No. 3, according to ComScore. bloomberg

hondurasflagHonduran President Is Ousted in Coup
The Honduran president, Manuel Zelaya, was ousted by the army on Sunday after pressing ahead with plans for a referendum that opponents said could lay the groundwork for his eventual re-election, in the first military coup in Central America since the end of the cold war.

Soldiers entered the presidential palace in the capital, Tegucigalpa, and disarmed the presidential guard early Sunday, military officials said. Mr. Zelaya’s private secretary, Eduardo Enrique Reina, confirmed the arrest.

Mr. Zelaya flew into exile in Costa Rica, telling a local television station, “They are creating a monster they will not be able to contain.”

Much of the capital was without electricity on Sunday and residents stood on long lines to buy kerosene for home generators. Military tanks patrolled the streets and military planes flew overhead. Soldiers were on guard at all the main government buildings and military trucks dropped off police at strategic crossings throughout the city, residents said.

Political tensions have increased in recent weeks, as Mr. Zelaya pressed ahead with plans for a nonbinding referendum that opponents said would open the way for him to rewrite the constitution to run for re-election despite a one-term limit.

centralamericamapIn the weeks leading up to the referendum, supporters and opponents of the president held competing demonstrations.

Last week, the Supreme Court and Congress both declared the referendum unconstitutional. But on Thursday, the president led a group of protesters to an air force installation and seized the ballots, which the prosecutor’s office and the electoral tribunal had ordered confiscated.

After the armed forces commander, Romeo Vazquez, said that the military would not participate in the referendum, Mr. Zelaya fired him. But the Supreme Court declared the firing illegal.

President Obama said Sunday that he was deeply concerned by the reports from Honduras about the detention and expulsion of the president.

“I call on all political and social actors in Honduras to respect democratic norms, the rule of law and the tenets of the Inter-American Democratic charter,” Mr. Obama said in a statement. “Any existing tensions and disputes must be resolved peacefully through dialogue free from any outside interference.”

Administration officials said the president spoke with his national security adviser, Gen. James Jones, about the situation and was receiving updates throughout the day. The call from Mr. Obama echoed a statement from the Organization of American States on Friday.

zelayablueflag

Mr. Zelaya, who has the support of labor unions and the poor, is an ally of President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela. During his three years in office, opposition to the president has mounted from the middle class and the wealthy business community who fear that he is planning to introduce Mr. Chávez’s brand of socialist populism into the country, one of Latin America’s poorest.

Opponents of Mr. Zelaya charged that he was following the example of Mr. Chávez, who has repeatedly called Venezuelans to the polls to approve his re-election.

Mr. Chávez was quick to react to the events unfolding in Honduras. In comments to Telesur, the regional news network backed by Venezuela’s government, he said: “Behind these soldiers is the Honduran bourgeoisie, the rich who converted Honduras into a banana republic, a military and political base for the North American empire.” NYT

If Iraq was main stream media’s failure, is Iran social network media’s failure?
The New York Times apologized for being a mouthpiece for the Bush Administration. For failing to question the motives of their sources or to investigate claims that would contradict what the American people seemed to want, for, afterall, the Fox News audience ruled the day. Try telling their audience that Saddam Hussein, while a madman, was actually defenseless and not intent on harming us. This was a truth perhaps Americans did not want to hear at the time but the truth nevertheless and that is what journalism is supposed to seek.

If social networking media is our the future of our journalism, then how do we judge truth in 140 characters?

Google handles roughly two-thirds of all Internet searches. It owns the largest online video site, YouTube, which is more than 10 times more popular than its nearest competitor. And last year, Google sold nearly $22 billion in advertising, more than any media company in the world.

With all those riches and more, how is Google a relatively small company, one that is vulnerable to competition and whose luck could turn any day?

Dana Wagner is happy to explain.

Mr. Wagner, who is Google’s “senior competition counsel,” faces the Sisyphean task of convincing the world that his employer is not unassailable.

“Competition is a click away,” Mr. Wagner says. It’s part of a stump speech he has given in Silicon Valley, New York and Washington for the last few months to reporters, legal scholars, Congressional staff members, industry groups and anybody else who might influence public opinion about Google.

“We are in an industry that is subject to disruption and we can’t take anything for granted,” he adds.

Google has begun this public-relations offensive because it is in the midst of a treacherous rite of passage for powerful technology companies — regulators are intensely scrutinizing its every move, as they once did with AT&T, I.B.M., Intel and Microsoft. Some analysts say that government opposition, here or in Europe, could pose the biggest threat to Google’s continued success. more
