The IRS estimates that 130 million taxpayers will receive checks of at least $300 beginning in May, right on the heels of the busy income tax season. However, the stimulus payment will not reduce a taxpayer’s refund or increase the amount owed on an individual’s tax return for 2008.

And while the stimulus payment is not taxable next year, taxpayers are encouraged to keep a copy of the IRS notice they will receive later this year listing the amount of the payment. In the event a taxpayer does not qualify to receive the full amount this year but does next year, the notice will be a record of the previous amount received.
